Ses Da Great – Duality Pt. 1: Young Man – Old Soul

Artwork by Intell Hazefield

Ses Da Great sets off his thematic mixtape trilogy, Duality, with his first installment, Young Man – Old Soul. In this chapter of Duality, Ses puts his spin on old school flows and uses classic hip hop sampledelic beats as a soundtrack to introduce himself as the “Young man spitting like my hair grey.” Some say wisdom comes with age, but in this project, Ses Da Great shows he’s put in the man-hours to accrue the experience of someone way beyond their years.

The Duality series is a prequel to the album All In. Stay tuned for the next two installments of Duality in coming weeks and then the release of All In following shortly after.

D.O.C. – What Ya’ll Really Want

The Dr. Of Creativity (D.O.C.) wrote, produced, directed, and edited his first official Official video in preparation for his upcoming release “When I’m Famous.” Something about D.O.C.’s swaggerful ride across the top of a parking garage makes Albany look like the west coast, only much colder.

Beat Tape: BeatzByPyro Presents The Firehouse

I told you it would be here soon. Here it is. A collection of industry/radio ready instrumentals from Mob Muzik’s youngest producer, BeatzByPyro.

Whether you want to rap over instrumentals that don’t already have 100K different rappers spitting verses on YouTube, or you just like to listen to good production (we know the producer should have more credit for the majority of these radio hits nowadays), this mixtape has you covered.

A.T.G. ft. 518 United (Directed by Intell Hazefield)

9 lyricists and a beatboxer on an original beat, directed by Intell Hazefield… nuff said.

From JPlus’ Youtube

Background Info:

Earlier this year, Albany based rap group, Against The Grain, reached out to some of the best writers, rappers, producers, videographers and directors from upstate New York to start an alliance that would ultimately spawn a movement. The end result of which was “You Ought To Know” … a collaborative project which features 10 of the most talented MC’s that the east cost has to offer. The song was recorded in downtown Albany on the very day that Hurricane Irene ravaged the North East. The storm ended up being fitting backdrop for a record that would ultimately change the rules of engagement surrounding hip-hop in the Capital District. The culture of hate and animosity that once plagued the local underground scene has subsequently been replaced with one of unity and camaraderie. And while the competitive spirit of hip-hop lives on, it is now amplified by support and enthusiasm from the diverse MC’s comprising the movement, and the fans that support them. We are 518 United.

GEOHN – “Love Let Go Lose Control” [Directed by Jace]

Who says the rotating freeze frame effect should be reserved only for high action blockbusters with cheesy acting? Director Jace implements this technique in his latest video to give R&B/soul artist Geohn enough time to sing his entire song “Love Let Go Lose Control” in the ear of a beautiful young lady (Adrien René) who has to make a tough decision. Peep it below.

Beatzbypyro Releasing Beat Tape End January

Later this month, Mob Muzik’s youngest producer, Beatzbypyro, will be releasing his first mixtape full of all instrumentals. I’ve been told that the beats on The Firehouse Vol 1. have been crafted, mixed carefully and are industry quality and radio ready.

This young dude has talent. Check out some of his work on some of Mob Muzik’s previous work and also on his Beatzbypyro YouTube page.

KassCrook – Determination

KassCrook Determination

After his TRUSIC debut, Breaking Point, KassCrook was determined to keep working, determined to continue to grow artistically, and determined to deliver a solid, well-thought-out, quality product with his new mixtape “Determination.” That is exactly what he did with this project. I love the beat selection, concepts, and overall tone of this project.

Mister Five O’clock – Happy Hour

“Happy Hour” reminds me of just that. A few tracks are like taking that first drink on a Friday to wind down from the work week, but then the majority are like the second drink on, partying into the weekend. The Grand Rapids rapper, Mister Five O’Clock is definitely attacking the radio and the club with this one. Check it out.

Jaja Gibore – Journey To The Home Of The Gods

Lyricist Jaja Gibore and music video director Hypeset take you on a behind-the-scenes look, shot documentary style, on Jaja’s completion of his latest project “Home Of The Gods.” This project is going to be a conceptual mixtape loosely based on the gods of Greco-Roman mythology. So far it’s looking and sounding good. No release date yet, but I’m thinking first quarter of 2012.

Undun – A Short Film From The Roots

I rarely post anything from major artists, but when something is this creative and well-executed I have to share it. It’s hard to say this is a music video when it’s such a good short film. I’m not a Film Noir expert, but this narrative draws heavily on the film style. This video includes these four cuts from The Roots new thematic album, Undun: “Tip The Scale,” “Stomp,” “Make My,” and “Sleep.” Directed by Clifford Bell.

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

Whitney Coleman – Falling Hearts

I enjoy anything that musician Whitney Coleman or director Jace produces on their own, but when these two great minds come together it’s really something special. The lyrics are simple in a very poetic way, but what I really love is how the rhythm and cadence of certain lines over the afro-electro reminiscent beat adds another element to the song. I don’t want to give away too much, but this video is a great interpolation of the song, with a very conceptual narrative and stylistic execution from Jace. Also lending to the creativity in this video is Erica Mitchell, the stylist who put together Whitney’s chic, flowing ensemble.

Here is the back story on the song.

“I wrote this song about 4 years ago, actually all instrumentation and sounds that I made from my computer in Garage Band. I was sitting on my couch recovering from an ACL injury on my knee (note: I used to play basketball for my college) and a break up as well with a guy I used to date. In my misery I came up with this song. It represents something new…something true…something real and that can, in a sense, represent “love” in a different light…in a desperate, vulnerable light, that makes you risk anything to have it and to experience it. The title and video “Falling Hearts” is just that. Taking the notion of “Falling Stars” and “Falling in love” and literally showing it with representation of two people meeting …even if things don’t go well…that’s just how I want to love…risking it all”

Kass Crook – Lyrical Homicide ft. Jo Biggs and Ace Gifted

Kass Crook teams up with some First Class representatives to deliver a verbal onslaught for Kass’ new mixtape. The new project, the follow-up to Kass Crook’s Breaking Point, will be titled Determination. You can expect to get your hands on Determination before the end of this year. This is Kass Crook’s second video directed by DeSean Moore for Moore Than Vision.

B Way – 5 O’Clock (Remix)

Kloqwork CEO, B Way, jacks T-Pain’s beat and takes it to Times Square. The smooth lyrics, and calm flow work perfectly with this track. Visuals provided by Nells.

Richmond, VA Rapper Rome Montana

From the state that’s given us the likes of The Neptunes, The Clipse, and Timbaland, comes the rapper Rome Montana. He shares a certain likeness to a prolific pot-smoking Pittsburgh MC, but Rome seems to be the product of many influences in today’s hip hop culture. I’ve definitely peeped some clever, subtle lyrics in his work. Check out his latest below.

“Us Vs Them” Video on Monday Night Frequency

TRUSIC Us Vs Them

For week 10 of the Monday Night Frequency series over at DunDemWorld.com some TRUSIC All Stars release a song and video. Kane, Kwamizzle, and Kasscrook (just noticed the 3 K’s… noooooo) go in over the Mobb Deep “Burn” instrumental. Visuals provided by TRUSIC’s own DeSean Moore (Moore Than Vision).

Hand Gunz High – Wolfpack ft. Ses Da Great

Tonight’s full moon marks the release of Hand Gunz High’s first video off of the “Are You Afraid Of The Art?” project. Wolfpack features production from Best Kept Secret with a hook sampling a little Big L and Kwamizzle.

Jordan Reed – Aht Uh Mi Hed (Beat Tape)

Jordan Reed (@prodbyjr) is an 18 year old producer from the hometown of Wiz, Pittsburgh, PA. This project is only 7 tracks deep, but it shows the young producer’s versatile style. Listen and download his latest beat tape, Aht Uh Mi Hed, over at Datpiff.

My favorite tracks:
“Get Em High” – dope beat with stabby piano chords, and a vocal sample. Reminds me a little of Jada’s “Smoking Gun”… blawh!
“Self Made” – This one has an 80′s ballad crooner feel. Not many people sample joints like this.
“The Awaiting” – I’m always down for a little sample chopping and reversing.

Ses Da Great – Your Brain On Drugs

Self explanatory.

G Bags – Who’s That Fat Dude?

Off of Zues Juice and Y.F.F.R. 2 comes the Zues Lytning-directed video for the song “Who’s That Fat Dude?” G Bags goes in over a beat (also produced by Zues) that has the qualities of a street banger but is still seemingly playful; so Your Favorite Fat Rapper compliments it with his expected witty punchlines of street life, but this time with a little more humor. Expect the drop of Y.F.F.R. 2: Who’s Got The Juice Edition within the next week or so. Until then check out the this video.

Eman – I Want It All

Eman’s eyes light up as bright as the billboards of the “Big City of Dreams,” in this Michael Dispenza directed video. Coupled with a Will Smith sample, lyrics about his work ethic, and a tight flow, this is definitely a treat for all of you Eman fans.

J. Cole Meets Mr. Cheeks At The Armory, Albany Explodes
